What to do if your 529 plan asks for a voided check, bank letter, or bank statement

You can download a bank letter from your settings tab

Some 529 plans may ask you to provide additional documents before they can connect your Backpack account. This may include a voided check, bank confirmation letter, or bank statement showing your account and routing information.

Backpack does not provide voided checks. Our mission is to help families and schools move away from paper checks, so instead we provide a downloadable bank letter with the account information your 529 plan needs.

How to download your Backpack bank letter

  1. Sign in to your Backpack account.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Click Download Bank Letter.

  4. A bank letter will be generated with your account information.

  5. Download the letter and submit it to your 529 plan with any other requested documents.

What should I submit to my 529 plan?

If your 529 plan asks for a voided check, bank confirmation letter, or bank statement, you can submit your Backpack bank letter as the bank confirmation letter.

Your 529 plan may also ask you to complete their own verification form or provide additional documentation, such as a government-issued photo ID. Be sure to follow any instructions provided by your 529 plan.
