What to Do With Extra Funds in Your Backpack Account

Learn how to use leftover Backpack funds for future education expenses and how to re-contribute funds back to a 529 plan.

Most families choose…

Most families simply leave the remaining balance in Backpack and use it for upcoming educational costs.

Does the money need to go through the school?

No. Backpack funds do not need to go through the school. You can pay qualified expenses directly from the Backpack account.

Can my student access or use the funds?

Yes. Your student can use the same Backpack account and routing number to pay providers directly for qualified education expenses.

Can I put the money back into my 529 plan?

Yes, families can re-contribute funds back into a 529 plan within 60 days of (1) the original withdrawal or (2) the refund date, if the university has refunded part of a tuition payment.

Each 529 plan handles re-contributions differently:

  • Some plans have a dedicated “re-contribution” process

  • Others simply ask you to follow the normal contribution workflow

To complete a re-contribution, log in to your 529 plan’s portal and enter your Backpack account number and routing number so the plan can pull in the funds.

Your Backpack account number and routing number can be found on your Dashboard when you log in to your Backpack account (https://app.backpackpay.com/login).

What if I do not want to recontribute my funds?

If you choose not to return the funds, you can keep them in Backpack and use them for qualified education expenses such as textbooks, supplies, housing, groceries, and other eligible costs. Payments can be made directly using your Backpack account details.

Can I transfer funds back to my personal bank account?

If you added funds to your Backpack account from a personal bank account (rather than from a 529 plan), you can initiate a transfer from your Bank's Portal to debit the funds from your Backpack account.

Backpack doesn't have a feature to push a transfer directly to a bank account. Backpack can only send payments directly to a school. To move funds out of Backpack and into your personal bank account, the transfer needs to be initiated from your bank's side.

How to pull funds from Backpack into your personal bank account

  1. Log in to your personal bank's online banking portal or mobile app.

  2. Find the option to link an external account or set up a transfer in (this may be called "add an external account," "link account," or similar, depending on your bank).

  3. Enter your Backpack account number and routing number. These can be found on your Dashboard when you log in to your Backpack account.

  4. Initiate the transfer amount from your bank's portal. This debits your Backpack account and deposits the funds into your personal bank account.

If these funds originally came from a 529 plan, consider re-contributing them to the 529 instead (see above) to keep the withdrawal treated as qualified for tax purposes.
