If you need to link an additional 529 Plan to your Backpack account, the process is simple, you add it from the 529 plan side, the same way you would add any external bank account.
"Additional 529 plan" also includes a plan owned by a spouse or partner, not just a second plan of your own. All of these plans can link to the same Backpack account using the same account and routing numbers.
Steps to Link an Additional 529 Plan:
Login to Your Backpack Dashboard: Access your Backpack Dashboard and locate your Backpack account and routing numbers.
Add Backpack as a New Bank on the 529 Plan: Log into the additional 529 plan (your own second plan, or a spouse's/partner's plan), and add Backpack as a new bank account using those same account and routing numbers, just like you would add any other external bank account.
By using the same account and routing numbers, all of your 529 Plans stay linked to the same Backpack account, simplifying the management of your funds and payments.
Linking a Spouse's or Partner's 529 Plan (In-App Option)
If you'd prefer, a spouse or partner's 529 plan can also be linked directly from within Backpack instead of adding it from the 529 side:
Go to your Dashboard and click on the student's page you want to link the plan to.
Click "Link a 529 plan" or "Add funding source."
Select your spouse's plan provider from the list.
Enter your spouse's plan credentials (their login, not yours).
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the link.
Note: you do not need a separate Backpack account for your spouse. Both spouses' 529 plans can be linked to the same Backpack account and managed from one Dashboard.
Can 529 Plans with Different Owners Link to the Same Backpack Account?
Yes. If more than one person owns a 529 Plan for the same student (for example, one parent's plan and the other parent's plan), all of those plans can link to a single Backpack account. Just add Backpack as a new bank on each plan using the same account and routing numbers, or use the in-app linking flow above. You don't need a separate Backpack account for each plan or each owner.
Note that your Backpack dashboard only displays the first 529 Plan you linked, but funds withdrawn from your other linked plans will still arrive in your Backpack account as normal.
Exception: a few plans (Capital Group / CollegeAmerica, Vanguard, and College Counts – Alabama) require the 529 account holder's name to match the name on the Backpack account. For those plans, a 529 owned by a different person can't be linked to that same Backpack account.
