What are the account and routing numbers on my Backpack dashboard?

Your Backpack account and routing numbers belong to your Backpack checking account, not your 529 plan. What they are, how to use them, and why Backpack can't connect to the wrong 529 or beneficiary.

The account and routing numbers shown on your dashboard belong to your Backpack bank account.

They are not:

  • Your 529 plan account number

  • Your student’s university account number

  • An account belonging to your university

Your Backpack account is a checking account held in your name. It provides a secure place to receive money electronically from your 529 plan before using those funds to pay your student’s university.

What are these numbers used for?

The two numbers work together to identify your Backpack account:

  • The routing number identifies the bank.

  • The account number identifies your individual Backpack account.

You can use these details to add Backpack as an external bank account or withdrawal account within your 529 plan.

Think of your Backpack account as the connection between your 529 plan and your student’s university:

529 plan → Backpack account → University tuition payment

How do I use my Backpack account details?

  1. Sign in to your 529 plan’s website.

  2. Look for an option such as Add a bank account, Link an external account, or Add a withdrawal account.

  3. Enter the bank account owner, routing number, and account number exactly as they appear on your Backpack dashboard.

  4. Complete any verification required by your 529 plan. Some plans may require you to verify small test deposits or wait several days before the account can be used.

  5. Once the account is linked, request a withdrawal from your 529 plan to your Backpack account.

  6. When the funds arrive in Backpack, you can use them to pay your student’s tuition.

You may also be able to add your Backpack account to an investment or savings account that allows electronic ACH transfers.

Where can I find the full account number?

Your account number is partially hidden on the dashboard for security. Select the eye icon beside it to reveal the complete number.

Be sure to copy both the routing number and account number carefully. An incorrect number may delay or prevent your transfer.

What if a financial advisor manages my 529 plan?

You can share your Backpack account and routing numbers with your financial advisor and ask them to use the account as the destination for your 529 withdrawal.

Only share these details with your 529 provider, financial institution, financial advisor, or another trusted party helping you transfer your education funds.
