When adding Backpack as a new bank account to your 529 Plan, you might encounter a 15-day holding period before you can withdraw funds. This holding period is a common feature among many 529 Plans to ensure security and proper processing. Other plans may use micro-deposits (depositing two small amounts to your Backpack account) to verify your newly added account is yours.
Here's what you need to know and do during this time.
What to Do During the Holding Period
While waiting for the holding period to end, you can take proactive steps to ensure your tuition payment is timely and your enrollment is secured. Here's how:
Setup a Tuition Payment in Backpack: You can initiate a tuition payment setup in Backpack before withdrawing your 529 funds. This preemptive step informs your school that you are in the process of making a payment, thereby securing your enrollment.
Completing your withdrawal and payment: Once the holding period ends, the next step depends on your 529 plan. Some plans withdraw to Backpack automatically, others need you to initiate the withdrawal yourself from your 529 portal. When you go through Pay Tuition or Add Funds in Backpack and select your 529 plan, we'll guide you through exactly what your plan requires. As soon as the funds land in your Backpack account, we automatically process the pending tuition payment you set up, so your payment goes through without further action.
By setting up your tuition payment in advance, you can avoid any enrollment issues and ensure that your funds are allocated as soon as they become available.
