Some 529 plans can pay your university electronically, directly through the plan's own online portal, without you ever needing to create a Backpack account. This is called Direct Pay.
How do I know if my plan is set up for Direct Pay?
When you go through the Backpack signup flow and select your university and 529 plan, we'll let you know right away if your school and 529 Plan supports Direct Pay. Instead of asking you to verify your mobile number and email, you'll see a message letting you know to sign in to your 529 plan's own portal and submit your payment there.
Whether Direct Pay is available depends on both your specific 529 plan and your university. The same 529 plan can be Direct Pay for one school and require a full Backpack account for another, so it's worth checking the signup flow for your specific university rather than assuming based on what a friend or family member experienced elsewhere.
How do I make a payment with Direct Pay?
If your plan and university combination is set up for Direct Pay:
Log in to your 529 plan's own online portal (not Backpack).
Look for an option like "Pay to School" or "Make a Payment."
Follow your 529 provider's steps to submit an electronic payment directly to your university.
You do not need to create a Backpack account for this payment.
Still have questions?
If you started creating a Backpack account and were routed to a Direct Pay message instead, that's expected, not an error. If anything about the process is unclear, reach out to our support team through live chat or at [email protected] and we're happy to help.
